Exercise Free Weights -- Tips for Success

There are many benefits of strength training. When strength training is added to a cardiovascular fitness routine and healthy diet, it can improve the look of your body as well as your overall health. There are two different ways to strength train -- with weight machines or exercise free weights.

There are several differences between weight machines and free weights. Weight machines restrict your range of motion, free weights do not. When it comes to price, weight machines are quite a bit more expensive than free weights. That's why so many home gym users choose free weights for their strength training.

Free weights can be used to work every part of your body. However, it's very important that you understand the proper way to use free weights to avoid strain or injury. If you purchase new a free weight system from a respected brand name, you'll almost always recieve detailed instructions for use. Some products even come with instructional tapes or DVDs. Another way to learn how to use free weights is to head to your local library. There you can find a variety of books and videos that will show you different exercises and the proper way to do them.

No matter what exercise you're doing, your spine should stay straight and you should never over-extend. Always control the movement when lifting weights and don't allow the weight to control you. If you're power lifting, bench pressing or using very heavy weights you will need a spotter to ensure safety. Believe it or not, many free weight injuries occur when a weight is dropped. So always be very careful when picking up or putting down your free weights.

You might think that free weights aren't for you. Maybe you don't want big muscles. If that's the case, you can use lighter free weights to add definition and tone without bulk. There are free weights that are as light as two pounds. No matter what kind of exercise free weights you choose, it's important to use them consistently. Strength training 20 minutes, three times a week goes a long way towards a better body and better health!
